FOR THE LOVE OF OXYGEN

Oxygen. We take it for granted, don't we? Then suddenly it's all we can think about. Oxygen dependence can be a game-changer, but it doesn't have to be a life-changer. I've spent years learning about the latest in portable oxygen equipment. There are so many options, and I want to share them with you. I'm the Oxygen Gal, teacher of all things oxygen!

SeQual Eclipse 5 Is Now Available

September 13, 2013 By Allison Waters 6 Comments

SeQual Eclipse 5

The SeQual Eclipse 5 is now available for purchase from internet retailers. According to SeQual literature:

The new generation of SeQual Eclipse raises the bar for POC performance. The Eclipse 5 features the same benefits that you love about the Eclipse 3, but with next generation internal components that enhance the reliability of the POC. The Eclipse 5 goes where you go, with improved DC power operation that allows for full functionality of the Eclipse 5 when running from DC outlets. All continuous flow settings, up to 3 LPM, as well as all pulse flow settings, including the largest super setting of 192 mL, are available while operation on DC power. The Eclipse 5 battery will also charge while the unit is connected to DC power, which eliminates any anxiety of failed batteries on long road trips.

DC Power Improvements

The ability to work on all settings in thSeQual Eclipse 5e car on DC power is the most noticeable improvement the Eclipse 5 over its predecessor, the Eclipse 3. The Eclipse 3 battery charging mechanism was completely disabled while on DC power, and it would only operate up to 2 LPM on DC power. The Eclipse 5 frees up the DC adapter to power the unit at all settings and charge the battery. This is a welcome feature for patients with higher oxygen needs. Now you can stay on-the-go longer, knowing that your automobile will power your unit and recharge the battery.

While the Eclipse 5 battery will charge while plugged into DC power, do not expect the same rate of charge as you would see when plugged into an electrical outlet. The ability to charge the battery will ultimately depend on the amount of power your car provides. Your car’s outlet may not provide sufficient power to make use of the Eclipse 5’s battery charging feature. It is best to test the Eclipse in each vehicle you plan to use before a road trip to ensure that it will work as expected. To test your Eclipse 5 in the car:

  • Have the car running before you plug the Eclipse 5 into the DC outlet.
  • Use the DC accessory outlet closest to the car’s battery.  This one tends to have the least power fluctuations and draws the most power.
  • Start the Eclipse on the lowest (0.5 LPM) continuous flow setting.
  • Increase the continuous liter flow incrementally, testing each setting to ensure that the Eclipse does not alarm

Unfortunately, there aren’t any concentrators available that will provide 5-6 liters on continuous flow. The Eclipse 5 is the most powerful unit on the market, providing the largest puff of oxygen per breath while on pulse flow.

Unfortunately, there is no list of specific vehicles that will provide enough power for the Eclipse 5. However, if you vehicle has multiple outlets, it is recommended that you use the one closest to the motor.

eclipse 5 will not work on 2013 Hyundai azera, tried all of the outlets and then an inverter. asked the manufacturer for a list and they said they don’t have one.
how can they say it works in automobiles and then not tell you which ones??
when I read a statement like that I assume all automobiles are compatible and I would be wrong.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Does the connection to the outlet not work at all? Or does it power the unit, but not charge the battery?

I have also heard that they are unable to provide a list of vehicles that will not work.

For the benefit of all readers who are interested in the Eclipse, the Eclipse 5 Manual states:

When the Eclipse 5 is connected to the DC supply in a vehicle, the following applies:
      • The Eclipse 5 will run at 3.0LPM on continuous flow while being operated with the DC Supply in a car.
      • The Eclipse 5 will charge the battery while on DC Supply in a car while running on continuous flow at 2LPM or less.
      • If the Eclipse 5 battery is being charged, the battery symbol will waterfall. If the Eclipse 5 battery is not charging, the battery symbol will be displayed solid.

      It further states:

Note: While operating the device from a DC power supply, the Battery may not charge.
Note: When operating the Eclipse from a DC power supply, it is recommended that the Pulse Dose Mode be used if prescribed to use a pulse
      dose device.
